BJP’s Sunil Sangwan, ex-jailer in whose tenure Ram Rahim got out 6 times, wins

BJP candidate Sunil Sangwan won in Charkhi Dadri Assembly constituency in the Haryana election results announced on Tuesday. Sangwan was the superintendent of the jail where Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was lodged.
Sunil Sangwan defeated Congress’s Manisha Sangwan by 1,957 votes. His name appeared in the BJP’s first list of 67 candidates on September 5.
Sunil Sangwan was the former Suprintendent of Sunariya Jail in Rohtak, where Ram Rahim was lodged on charges of rape and murder. He retired from the post just before the elections and joined the BJP.
Notably, during Sangwan’s stint at the jail, Gurmeet Ram Rahim was granted paroles or furloughs as much as six times.
His father, Satpal Sangwan, was a member of the Congress. But he also quit the Congress in July to join the BJP.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh walked out of the Rohtak jail on October 2, days ahead of the Haryana election. His release was due to his alleged good conduct inside the jail.
Notably, it is the jail superintendent’s job to verify and report to the parole board about the prisoner. Based on the prisoner’s behaviour and other factors, the jail superintendent may give a recommendation either supporting or opposing the parole application.
The Dera chief has been granted paroles as many as 15 times and has spent over 259 days out of jail in the past seven years. Interestingly, his paroles have coincided with either Assembly, Lok Sabha or panchayat polls.
